The workshop will be taught by North Carolina writer Emily Dunlap Carter\, the author of A Spork in the Road: Reflections on the Journey\, which shares the stories that shaped her: growing up in the rural South\, raising two sassy children\, building a life with her husband (award-winning musician John)\, and finding her voice as a writer. With warmth\, humor\, and the kind of wisdom that sticks to your ribs\, Carter’s memoir is a love letter to family\, resilience\, and the joy of a well-told tale. Carter’s writing talents cross genres\, from memoir and creative nonfiction\, to prose poetry\, to country songs. The workshop is free and open to the public. However\, space is limited. SUMMARY:PLP in Production\, Day 1: Coastal Connections
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Carteret County’s Planck Length Publishing and funded by Narrative Arts of Wilmington\, Coastal Connections is a two-day creative media intensive hosted at the Morehead City Library and produced entirely by local youth\, ages 13-21. This project explores third spaces—gathering places like parks\, cafés\, and barbershops—and how they help people build real connection in a digital age. \nOn Day One\, our media producers will hit the streets of Downtown Morehead City to collect soundscapes\, conduct interviews\, and gather inspiration. Fieldwork will include a local service provider\, a local park and pier\, and a local restaurant\, where they’ll record conversations and ambient sound during a working lunch. \nThis is a closed production day\, but the work being created will be shared with the public later this summer through a podcast featured on the EPIC Carteret platform\, a print zine\, and a community showcase event. Participants will reflect on what they’ve discovered about community\, connection\, and the places where we meet. \nStay tuned for a public showcase event—including the debut of the Coastal Connections special edition podcast presented on the EPIC Carteret platform\, a zine launch\, and a behind-the-scenes mini-documentary produced by local videographer Olivia Van Sickle.
