Weird Tales Book Cover Contest

Design the face of the strange.

Will your artistic eye define this first-of-its-kind anthology?

We’re looking for a cover that captures the uncanny spirit of Weird Tales from Waves End Retreat—our upcoming anthology set in a fictional North Carolina beach trailer park, where each strange tale unfolds in a different trailer and a different genre.

From alien abductions to backwoods ghost stories, it’s a collection full of mystery, magic, and salt-cured suspense. Learn more.

What We’re Looking For

Think vintage paperback meets Southern Gothic Weird.

Think sun-bleached Airstreams, cryptic signage, storm-drenched postcards, flickering porch lights, and that one trailer with something not quite right inside.

We welcome both literal and abstract interpretations. You do not need to design the cover layout. The judges will consider artwork only. We will finalize the actual design layout in-house.

Artists are encouraged to read the Lot 1 story first draft (released May 1) to get a feel for the tone of the anthology.

Tips for a Strong Submission

  • Let your design suggest a story, but don’t try to tell the whole plot.
  • Weird doesn’t mean chaotic—choose a mood and build tension.
  • Consider textures: sun-faded paint, rust, mist, motel neon, old postcards.
  • Take inspiration from retro horror, DIY zines, or classic sci-fi paperbacks.
  • Coastal is key. Sand, sea, heat, isolation—let the setting do work.
  • No need to include characters—implied presence can be creepier.
  • This is our first PLP anthology, so consider our brand colors to show you care.

Terms of Submission for Weird Tales from Waves End Retreat Cover Art Contest

Thank you for considering submitting your artwork to the Weird Tales from Waves End Retreat cover art contest. Our goal is to foster a community of artists who are inspired by the strange, uncanny, and saltwater-haunted world of coastal Weird fiction. Whether or not your cover art is selected, we are grateful for the time, energy, and creativity you’ve shared with us.

  • No Submission Fee. There is no fee to submit your artwork for consideration. We are grateful for your creative contributions and encourage artists of all backgrounds and experience levels to participate.
  • Compensation.
    • Primary Cover Art Selection: The artist whose work is selected as the official cover of the Weird Tales from Waves End Retreat anthology will receive a $200 honorarium upon signing the publication agreement. This is a one-time rights payment for the use of the work as specified below.
    • “Alternate Covers” Feature (WeirdFest Zine): Up to 6 additional artists may be selected to have their work featured in the “Alternate Covers” section of the limited-edition WeirdFest Zine. Each selected “Alternate Cover” artist will receive a $50 honorarium and 3 complimentary copies of the zine.Note: The WeirdFest Zine is a small-run, community-driven project intended to celebrate the wider creative circle of Waves End contributors. By participating, you help support the fundraising efforts for the Waves End anthology and future community projects.
  • Rights.
    • For the Primary Cover Art, we ask for First Worldwide Publication Rights (print and digital), as well as non-exclusive rights to use the artwork for promotional purposes related to the anthology.
    • For Alternate Cover selections, we request one-time publication rights for use in the WeirdFest Zine, as well as promotional use tied to that zine’s release.
    • In all cases, rights revert fully to the artist six months after publication. You are welcome (and encouraged!) to sell prints, display the work in your portfolio, or resell it elsewhere after that date. Just remember us when you’re famous, superstar!
  • Additional Uses. If your artwork is not selected for this project but aligns beautifully with future Waves End endeavors (special editions, community showcases, podcast episodes, etc.), we may reach out to you with additional opportunities. Any such use would be negotiated separately and only with your enthusiastic agreement.
  • Artists whose work are selected for the WeirdFest zine will be notified no later than September 22, 2025.
  • If you do not receive an acceptance by this date, your artwork will not be included in this zine, but it may still be under consideration for other projects. If so, we will communicate with you directly to discuss that possibility.
  • We believe that the submission process should be generative, not extractive. Whenever possible, we will offer thoughtful feedback on your submission, regardless of whether it is accepted.
  • Due to the anticipated volume of submissions and the labor involved, feedback may take up to six months to be delivered.

Being part of the Planck Length creative community means more than a single contest. Whether or not your artwork is selected for publication, your submission is valued, and we hope to continue building relationships that uplift independent artists through future collaborations and events.

  • All submitted work must be the original creation of the author, previously unpublished in print or digital media.
  • By submitting, you affirm that you hold full rights to the submitted work and have the authority to grant us the publication rights outlined here, should your artwork be used.

We believe that art, like other story forms, emerges from a human spark: the messy, miraculous, beautiful experience of being alive. No machine can replicate that spark.

That said, we also recognize that creative tools, including AI-assisted design tools, can be powerful aids in shaping, refining, or unlocking artistic visions, especially for artists who face barriers of time, physical ability, or access to traditional resources.

We welcome artwork that originates from a human creative impulse. If AI tools have supported your process, whether as a sketch generator, a texture enhancer, or a brainstorming tool, you are welcome here. We simply ask that you, the human artist, remain the primary creator: the hand on the brush, the eye making choices, the creative consciousness behind the piece.

We frequently use fully AI-generated images because we, too, are limited by time and resources. However, for this cover, we are seeking to support a human artist, and so we’re not in the market for artwork where human authorship is minimal or absent (e.g., random AI prompt generations with no meaningful human input). But we trust our artists to use every tool at their disposal with integrity and discernment, in service of their own artistic vision.

If you’re unsure whether your submission fits this guideline, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re happy to have the conversation.
